PROJECT PLAN: Stopping Child Abuse
MISSION STATEMENT:
SFiAM's mission is to create opportunity and change. We are a small pilot school who took on the challenge of being different and we are seeing amazing results. Girls Build LA is the perfect catalyst for our girls to make an impact on our community while being role models to the other students at our school. SFiAM is committed to providing students with the real world skills that will prepare them for their future; what better opportunity than improving our community! Being a small school means that this small group of 10 girls will be demonstrating their ability to the whole school. All of SFiAM will see what girls are capable of and what students can accomplish when given the opportunity. If we are chosen, Girls Build LA will not impact the lives of 10 girls but the lives of 440 students.

PROJECT NEED:
We are very concerned about Child Abuse. We realize we can not stop child abuse but we can
1) educate people about child abuse,
2) we can help build girl's confidence and sense of value so they are less likely to become victims of abuse,
3) we can teach girls how to use their voice and
4) we can create a safe environment so victims are more likely to speak up.
This project is needed because child abuse is a growing problem that affects 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys. Child Abuse has a last impact on victims and something needs to be done.
Our problem is aligned with Health and Wellness because child abuse affects the emotional and mental health of its victims. It can also have a physical impact on them. Our issue is definitely a trauma that impacts a person's wellness.
PROCESS
Brainstorming to choose our topic
Students first talked about issues that bothered them. They wrote them on a post it and then put them on the board. We looked to see if they fit into a group or category. Then, we narrowed down the topics by choosing the ones we thought we the most important. When we got down to the top 3 we discussed each problem and what why it bothered us. Finally, we decided that we were most concerned about child abuse.
Understanding the issue
Once we had our topic we had to understand it. So we each wrote down questions we had about abuse. At the next meeting Ms. Garcia had us work in groups researching the answer to that question. We researched in some groups and wrote what we found it paragraphs. Then we added this information to our website.
Figuring out a solution
We all got together in a girl and Ms. Garcia asked us a bunch of questions like Why do you think people are victims, why wouldn't someone say no, how would an abuser pick a victim? We talked about these questions to understand how someone could be abused and what feelings they may have. Then we talked about what has made us feel strong and good about ourselves. We talked about this to figure out what activity could we do to empower other kids. Ms. Garcia shared her experience of abuse and it really stood out to us. We decided we want to share our stories so other students will feel brave enough to share their stories. We also decided we want to put on an activity where kids can feel strong and empowered.
Our plan
We are going to create a survey to find out what students know about abuse, how many have been abused, and try to collect stories of abuse. This will be part of our pre/post data.
We are going to make movies sharing stories. We may connect to the group I'm That Girl.
We are going to create an advisory lesson or PE lesson that allows students to feel empowered
Revised Plan
Our team went from 15 girls to 2-3 girls. Our new plan is to make one movie telling Ms. Garcia's story of abuse, and one video empowering kids so they know they matter. We will make a presentation to Ms. Garcia's English 7 classes. We will talk to them about the problem, show them some videos about abuse that will educate them and show them our videos.
Our goal is to:

ANTICIPATED OUTCOME:
We expect to educate students in our middle school and provide tools to create advocates instead of victims. We will build girls' confidence and sense of value so they are less likely to become a victim. We will create a program where girls have a place to turn to so if they were victims they have a way to cope.
REVISED ANTICIPATED OUTCOME
We expect to educate all 7th grade students about child abuse. We expect to make them realize it is a serious issue. We expect to move them to want to act. We also expect to inspire them to realize they are enough.

REFLECTION
We are proud of impacting 120 students. By watching the student watch the films it was obvious that it affected them. Not only were they engaged, they asked honest questions to try to better understand child abuse. Students were even moved enough to cry. We think our plan to educate students about child abuse and help them to realize they have a voice work.
However, we also think we could have done more. We should have done more activities with all members so we were connected. We went from 4 members to 15 to 10 to 2. We need to work on helping girls commit to our club and project. Because we were down to 2-3 girls we were not able to affect the whole school as we hope. We also wish we submitted our videos to some festivals so we could have impacted more kids.
We think we had a good start in educating student about the impact of child abuse. However, we believe there is so much more we can do. We would love to continue working on this topic next year since we are off to a great start.
